Smart HVAC technologies drive Middle East’s sustainable urban growth

The Middle East’s rapid urban expansion is creating unprecedented demand for advanced cooling technologies, positioning smart, energy-efficient HVAC systems as a critical enabler of sustainable development, according to LG.

With mega-projects, smart cities and hyperscale data centres reshaping the region’s skyline, cooling has become essential to maintaining economic productivity and operational continuity in a climate where summer temperatures frequently exceed 50°C. As governments pursue ambitious sustainability goals, the focus is shifting toward intelligent systems that reduce energy consumption while supporting long-term growth.

The regional HVAC market is projected to reach $18.98 billion by 2033, expanding at a 6.2% compound annual growth rate (CAGR). Meanwhile, the commercial HVAC segment is expected to grow to $1.72 billion by 2030, driven by demand for energy-efficient technologies across commercial, industrial and public infrastructure projects.
Smart cooling improves efficiency

Among the fastest-growing technologies are Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) systems, which accounted for 34.7% of the Middle East’s commercial HVAC market in 2024. Under hot, dry operating conditions, VRF systems can reduce electricity consumption by 48-52% compared with conventional air-conditioning systems.

LG said its AI-enabled MULTI V 5 VRF platform dynamically adjusts cooling performance according to changing environmental conditions, helping optimise energy use during periods of peak electricity demand.

For large-scale developments, district cooling continues to gain momentum. The Middle East’s district cooling market is forecast to reach $15.44 billion by 2034, creating demand for high-capacity air-cooled and water-cooled centrifugal chillers capable of serving large mixed-use developments and urban districts.

Artificial intelligence is also becoming increasingly important in HVAC management. AI-powered optimisation systems can reduce energy consumption by up to 30% in high-demand facilities, while predictive maintenance can lower equipment downtime by 25%. Through cloud-based monitoring platforms, operators can track equipment performance in real time and move from reactive maintenance to predictive asset management.
Supporting regional sustainability goals

Energy-efficient HVAC systems are expected to play a central role in helping governments achieve their environmental targets.

Globally, buildings account for 39% of carbon dioxide emissions, with 28% generated through operational energy use. Across the Gulf, where air conditioning can account for more than 60% of household electricity consumption, improving cooling efficiency has become a strategic priority.

Advanced HVAC technologies are supporting initiatives such as the UAE Energy Strategy 2050, which aims to improve energy efficiency by 45%, while also contributing to Dubai’s programme to retrofit 30,000 buildings by 2030.

Combining intelligent cooling systems with building upgrades can significantly reduce energy consumption while helping developers meet increasingly stringent sustainability requirements.
Data centres fuel market growth

The rapid expansion of data centres is emerging as one of the strongest growth drivers for the commercial HVAC sector.

The regional data centre cooling market is expected to record the highest commercial HVAC growth rate, with a projected 8.23% CAGR through 2030. More than 300MW of additional IT capacity is expected to come online across the GCC by 2026, while announced AI data centre investments exceed $30 billion through 2030.

These facilities require specialised cooling technologies, including precision computer room air conditioning systems, liquid cooling solutions and high-efficiency chillers capable of supporting increasingly dense computing environments.
Retrofit market remains strong

Retrofitting existing buildings also continues to generate significant demand, accounting for 57.7% of the regional commercial HVAC market in 2024.

Saudi Arabia remains one of the fastest-growing markets, with HVAC demand forecast to expand at a 8.45% CAGR through 2030, supported by tourism, entertainment and infrastructure developments under Saudi Vision 2030.

Commercial customers are increasingly seeking long-term service partnerships that combine remote diagnostics, predictive maintenance, engineering support and rapid spare-parts availability to maximise system reliability while reducing lifecycle costs.
Developing future talent

As smart HVAC systems become more sophisticated, the industry is placing greater emphasis on workforce development to address skills shortages.

LG said its MEA Hub Academy in Dubai provides practical training for engineers and facility managers through technical laboratories, product showrooms and control rooms, helping prepare a new generation of specialists to manage increasingly digital building systems.

According to the company, the future of HVAC extends beyond cooling performance alone, with intelligent, sustainable and connected systems expected to play a central role in improving energy efficiency, enhancing occupant comfort and supporting the region’s long-term environmental ambitions.
